120 hp motorkicks up in reverse

Hi all, I have a 19 foot Larson boat with a 1971 model #1207 HD 120 hp motor and it kicks up when I put in reverse.Any ideas what be causing it? could it be some type of locking mechanisism not working? thanks Chuck

The engine have a black handle bellow the support plate.this handle
rotates to the right and left to lock and unlock the outdrive.
You must have the handle unlocked,that is the reason the outdrive
hold up-sorry by my english -I speak spanish.
