I am cleaning up my dad's boat and going to try to get it out on the water again this summer. It's got a 1979 (we believe) 70hp Evinrude 3-cylinder. The engine has not been run for about 10 years, but has been covered outdoors.

My first thought is to start at the 'tune-up' section of the shop manual and go from there. My question for the experts is: do you have any advice on how to get her up and running again?

From the shop manual, I gather:
a. compression check
b. spark plug/wires
c. lower unit and water pump check
d. fuel filter
e. battery
f. fluids/lubrication

You guys are wonderful! I'm not sure how I missed that one when I skimmed through the FAQ! Thank you!

After all of the steps in faq, you will probably be ready to go. However, if it dosen't run well on the hose or in the water, and you don't have the necessary equiptment to test timing, rpm's, etc, it would be worth your time to go to a marine mechanic for the fine tuning.

Just remember, you have one of the best built outboards of that era and unless it was used commercialy ( or abused or neglected ) it will last for years to come, and most of the running parts are still available.

Best of luck
Les
