Good morning all.
Not sure what could be causing this so I'll post what happened.

Put the boat in the water yesterday. I took 4-5 laps around the lake at all speeds and the boat seemed to run fine. There were a few sputters but nothing major.

Went to the dock to pick up my dad so he could see the boat run.

We were going at near full throttle and the engine just shut off. We tried to turn the key again but all it did was beep like the battery was dead.

The negative side terminal cable was smoking and it actually melted a bit of the jacket off. We had to have the boat towed in.

Any ideas?

First thing would be to check all of the battery connections. No just visually, but take them apart and clean with a wire brush. Don't forget the two connections on the starter solenoid and also the ground cable where it is bolted to the engine block.
