I have a 1969 Merc 1000, I am looking to convert this motor to a short shaft motor, I have the short shaft midsection from a 1972 Merc 650, would these parts simply swap out or are there other parts or options available to make this switch?
Its not just the midsection that needs to be swapped out. The driveshaft from the lower unit also needs to be changed as well as the upper shift shaft and water tube.
Be careful when swapping out driveshafts. There were at least two different styles in that era and they are NOT interchangeable.
Unless you are willing to find a replacement driveshaft (won't be easy) etc and tear apart the lower unit to swap out the driveshaft, you might be better off trying to find a complete short shaft lower unit and do a full swap.
