Spark Plug Gaps

Good Morning. I have been reading this forum for quite a while, and really enjoy it. I have learned a lot from other peoples questions. Now it is time for one of my own.

Yesterday I had the chance to purchase a 1977 85hp v4 'rude for $100. The guy said it runs, but idles roughly. He has replaced plugs, wires, power pack, but that doesn't help. I put it up on a stand, pulled the plugs and they were gapped at .020" instead of the .040" in the manual!

What I want to know is how much that affects the idle of the motor, and if there is any serious damage that can come from this.

Thanks!

Re: Spark Plug Gaps

Yes that can affect the idle as you don't get the strong spark you get at the proper gap. However it should not cause any mechanical problems.
