I have a 1996 Johnson 25 hp Jet, SN: J25JREDC that will slowly come part way out of forward. Looks like the shift lever starts to move towards neutral when I add power. There is a plunger on the stbd side of engine, inside of the cover that has rubber on top with some springs. This plunger will not stay all the way down when power is added. I don't believe this is a lower unit issue because there are no lobes for fwd/rev, only a cam that changes the direction of thrust. Could the problem just be an adjustment or do I need to replace something? Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.
Edit: After some research, I've discovered that the plunger is called the neutral start plunger. I cannot determine how this thing operates or what it acutally manipulates, but it seems that this plunger is not staying all the way down when power is added, causing a change in engine power output. Any help or ideas are appreciated.
