My father inlaw brought over his 17' tiderunner with 1980 70hp Johnson that he and a fishing buddy decided to "wrench" on. While trying to drop the lower unit in an effort to replace the impeller they cracked the front of the midsection where the shift shaft goes through. I believe it involved a half rack of bud, several hammers and a prybar. The powerhead was recently rebuilt on the motor and it's a real clean boat. I've since secured an '83 70 off of CL for $200 with powerhead issues.

My question:

Should I swap powerheads or midsection/LU?

Is it worth tackling?

I'm a car guy and have capable hands but I much appreciate some experienced advice before taking it on. Thanks in advance.

Just use the lower unit and change the impeller first

Have you figured out how to take it off yet?

Re: 70hp Johnson project

The part that's cracked is actually the midsection between the LU and Powerhead.
