engine turns over but wont start

Guys, I have a 91model 5.7 v8 with thunderbolt ignition. I took it out a few days ago and she just shut down and wouldn't start back up...kinda like it ran out of gas. Anyway I replaced the ignition coil, she fired right up then shut down after a couple of minutes. I thought maybe I had a bad coil so I got another one, put it on and she did the same thing. Has anyone else experienced this?

Check voltage at the coil with the key in the RUN position but with the engine off, then check with the engine running, should be 9v. any higher and you'll burn out the coil. ( except when starting you'll have 12v to compensate on the draw from the starter )

could be a fuel issue too, gotta have both. :)

Uh oh...I put a 12 volt coil on there. Is that the wrong one or could the ignition sensor in the distributor cause it to foul?

I am no expert....

With that said, check the interupter swith and make sure it is not stuck.

We just had this issue, stopped in the middle of the lake and had to by-pass the switch to get going again. We still need to properly fix before we go back out.
