tach not working.

i realize this has probably been asked about 1000 times already on here but new to forumn and boating. i recently purchased a 19'spectre witha 225 evinrude vdo, i think the letters are, it is of 1989 vintage. tach was working this year earlier but i noticed somtimes at idle it would be bouncing around. now the other day it totally quit. i am thinking rectifier but want to know if there is anything else it could be. dont really wanna spend 200 bucks to fix if it doesn't work and it was a 5 dollar fix originally. any info/links to other posts on this would be great. thanks.

At the junction block at the motor try connecting the gray wire from the tach to either of the yellow wires at that juction block from the rectifier. You may have to try either one and start your motor if the tach works normal it is you rectifier regulator, if the tach does not work replace tach. Simple and quick .
