4.3 problems

I just recently purchased a 1999 stingray with a gmc 4.3. I believe it has the thunderbolt iV ignition. The boat had a cracked block. I just put in a rebuilt engine. I have replaced the spark plugs and coil. The engine idles fine but when you try to give it gas, it starts sputtering and sounds like it's sucking for air. Occasionally it will blow back thru the top of the 2bbl carb. You can see gas being sprayed in thru the carb. When hooking up the "purple/white" wire to the ground when timing, it makes no difference in the timing light settings. Any ideas? Also the oil pressure gauge doesn't register. Tried grounding the wire and still no response on the gauge. Bad gauge? Please help!

Re: 4.3 problems

A '99 would be Thunderbolt V, and evidenced by your purple/wht wire. My guess would be, something in the wiring harness is not hooked up correctly or bad or missing ground. Is your timing set to 10 degrees BTDC? Do you see it advance (not in base mode) when you rev it to 1500rpms?
