On the back of the gauge, you'll see a terminal marked "S" or sensor. Run a small jumper from that terminal to a ground. If the gauge pegs to full when grounded, the gauge is okay. In which case, the problem would be with the sending unit in the tank.

thanks Joe, I did what you said but the gauge jumped to empty,
it has 3 prongs and when i disconnect the third one it jumps to full.any thoughts? thanks,
