The engine was installed new in 2008 into a 1996 SeaRay Express Cruiser with an alpha sterndrive. I bought the boat this year and on my maiden voyage I was running smoothly for about 30 mins, cruising steadily at 3000 rpm's, oil pressure showed 42, temp 170, gas full, when the engine cut off. All power was was lost to the dash - including vhf and lights - but not the equipment connected directly to the battery. I'd wait about 5min's and power would come back, but before I could pull the anchor back in, it would stall again. This went on for an hour or so, when it finally allowed me to limp to the marina. I didn't attempt to go over 1200rpm's on my way back. The next day I tried to replicate the shut down while docked with the following results: 1. idled for 30 min's at 650rpm's with no problems. 2. ran fine at 1200rpm's for a few minutes. 3. revved up to 3000 rpm's and back down caused the rpm guage to freak out - I would put it back to idle and the guage would still read over 2000, but I could tap the guage and it would go back to normal. Shutting off the engine and restarting it would get the guage to read normal again. 4. Goosing the throttle fast up to 3500 rpm's would cause the shut down. I left it like that til tomorrow. All the fuses are good, the breaker didn't trip and the temp and oil pressure were fine. I'm thinking of running a cable directly from the battery to the fuse box and see if I can get it started that way. Any ideas?
