Shutters on 1979 Sea Ray 228 newbie

Shutters on 1979 Sea Ray 228 newbie

Ha guys, really like this forum. Took the old girl out this weekend to go fishing and overheated, just changed the lower water pump, found the water hose had come off, melted the top water pump tube guide and found the shutter melted at the shift shaft, from reading other threads it was a shutter, question is how do you put a new one in, I pulled the right side exhaust , port side and there was nothing there for a shutter, can you get to it from the rear, do you have to pull the stern drive, I have a seloc manual but cannot find anything about the shutters, do I need to lift the engine to get to the lower exhaust tube. Any help is greatly appreciated On a side note we did catch 8 catfish, lost two bass when my brother in law line broke, bummer.

some v-8 models had the shuuters at the bottom of the y-pipe - have to pull the engine to replace them, bad design

if you post your engine serial number there are folks here who can look it up and tell you what you have

I know it is a gm 305, the only number I have found that I can read is by the starter is 5228893, I have tried to look up parts on this number and it says it cannot find number, I hope this helps.

Thanks for that... I almost missed (would have if you didn't point it out), as I'm now just clicking straight past post that are too difficult to read... (Spent enough energy trying to teach the world to use punctuation )

So.. A seloc..

So, you have a 1979 228... and you want to know where the shutters are? Unfortunately the guys are right, they are down low. The exhaust Y-pipe is in 3 sections, and the shutters are at the joints where the 2 side pieces meet the tee, right under the engine... Nice picture in the engine manual on page 13 of section 5C (figure 1)...

Manuals.... You're going to want the Merc genuine manuals, yes....

Engine manual
Drive manual

1979 Mercruiser 228 overheated, melted shutter

1979 Mercruiser 228 overheated, melted shutter

Day 2, replaced the water pump yesterday and reconnected the water hose that had came off, I haven't replaced the shutter yet, wanted to see if I did any damage to the engine, no water in oil, engine started not as easy as before but started and ran, seem just a little rough, let idle for 10 to 15 min, water was circulating coming out the exhaust, never overheated, I could accelerate out of gear but when try to put into gear it would die, forward and reverse, after getting warm it was harder to start, would just turn over mostly. I can't see anything else melted are scorched, So any ideals what I should be looking for, should I pull the stern drive to check shift cable, All the wires look good, I do have on order two exhaust baffles, both r leaking with cracks and hole in them, all help is greatly appreciate, you guy are great, best sight I have ever found

compression check on a warm engine will give you an idea as to whats happening inside the motor

when was the last full tune-up??

sounds like yu have a lower shift cable issue, check it for melted outer casing

1979 Mercruiser 228 overheated, melted shutter

I did figure out the hard start was my reverse locking valve was out of adjustment, Did the compression test and all were up
  1. #1-148
  2. #3-155
  3. #5-145
  4. #7-160
  5. #2-148
  6. #4-144
  7. #6-135
  8. #8-142
the plugs were a little brown so I will put a tune up on it and adjust the reverse locking switch and hopefully that will be it unless someone can think of something else I need to check, all help is appreciated thanks.

Did you change the impeller in lower part of the outdrive for your over heat?

I believe you should have posted this in your first thread versus starting a duplicate thread. That way it stays in context and we can follow what you have done or not done. Looks like you already did replace your water pump. And shutters??
