Trim Cylinder Crack, can it be welded?

Any body had any luck having a crack in a trim cylinder welded up?

I was rushing moving my boat around the yard and backed it up and dug the foot into the ground, next thing I know I've got a 6 inch crack running down the cylinder.

Checking online I'm seeing this cylinder for $375-$500, ouch, stupid, stupid me. I haven't seen a used one in short order on ebay.

Any other suggestions?

I've never tried on a "small" cylinder like that, but on large ones, you can weld them, however, there more to it than just a weld, you have to rebuild the seals etc too, since you must take it all apart. Machine out the bore of the cylinder as well, since it will warp under the heat from the weld, etc. Id say your best bet is to try and find a used one.

I tig'd one once, didn't work out too well but it got me through the weekend. It was a whole lot of little tack welds and it still warped.

Any decent hydraulic repair shop should be able to tell you for sure.

Try going over to www.screamandfly.com and post in the parts wanted section. You might get lucky. I have on numerous occasions.
