help...prop shaft problem

ive got a 1971 mkii that i bought in jan 2010. this boat looks like it just left the factory. well today was the first time i put it in the water. after running it for about 20 minutes the prop shaft came out hitting the rudder bending it. now i must get divers to locate the missing shaft and prop. does anyone know where i can locate some new parts and why did this happen? thanks for any help steve

The key must not have been inserted into the shaft coupling that mounts to the transmission.
As a back up you can purchase a 2 part coupling that gooes around the shaft and has a bolt on bolt ends. Picture a doughnut cut in half .
this should be positioned so if the shaft comes off the coupling it wont travel more than a 1/2".
