minn kota speed problem

Somehow my trolling motor was left on overnight while in the up position(prop could not move). In morning speeds 1,2, and 5 works but 3 and 4 do nothing. It was on 3 overnight. Is the problem in motor or foot controller?

Re: minn kota speed problem

The issue is that with the prop stalled and power to the motor, something in the speed controller burned out due to the high current draw. Is there a fuse or circuit breaker at the battery for this troller. If not, you need one and it probably would have saved the motor. This has nothing to do with what's now damaged. Since we have no idea which motor you have or how old it is, it's hard to tell where the issue is. Since this is apparently a speed coil type of system the speed coils are in the motor. If it is a power drive type of motor than either the board in the foot pedal or the motor can be damaged.

The motor is a Minn lots edge 75 thrust. Sorry for lack of detail. Not very savvy when it comes to motors, of any type. I am lost why it can function on speeds 1,2,and 5 but not the others. The motor is less than 2 years old.

Speed control on that style of system begins with a switch that selects one of five speeds (and off). These are five separate circuits. On the other end of the circuits are the devices that actually control the speed of the motor or more specifically, the amount of current being fed too it. In the case of speed coils, there are a number of them that are wired in various combinations controlled by the selector switch. In some cases two coils are placed in series (such as #3 and #4) vs using #3 OR #4 separately. So it is possible to have two speeds burn out when only one is selected. The other type of speed conroller is a solid state device but the same logic applies. I'm guessing the speed selector switch is ok but the controller is not.

Is the controller in the head of the motor or in the foot control? Is this something easily replaced and if so is it worth it. Hate to replace so soon and has been a very good trolling motor.
