the engine runs fine on land can shift into foward and reverse and rev up in nuetral just fine, but when you put it in water it will stall out as soon as you put it into drive. now sometimes after trying to take off and stalling multiple times it will take off and run fine, but when you stop and try to go again same problem stalls out when you try to take off again. I took it to a marine machanic he said it wasnt getting fire in one of the cyclinders and that it needed a new coil pack. he replaced the coil pack and cleaned/tuned the carbs. then told me it was good to go. i took it to the lake yesterday and had the same problem, i dont think he put the engine under a load. before it would also run about 10mph and stay there for a couple seconds and you would feel a jerk and it would take off faster, also when it does take off it has hesitation when you push the throttle. it is getting fuel. the oil bulb is always hard and the fuel bulb is always pumped until hard before starts and they stay hard during operation. the engine will idle 50% of the time in water with no problem the other it just stalls out after a few seconds

OK
What motor are you discussing here ?? and what is your history with this motor to this point ??
If not done already you need to start by doing the following.
Compression test
Spark test
Fuel delivery test
Check spark plug condition.

The more info and history you can provide, the better advice you will get.

Re: 1996 Johnson outboard - stall

So summizing the mechanic found good compression and now spark and cleaned and serviced your carb's correctly you still need to verify that the fuel pump is pumping enough fuel.
Did the mechanic give you any results from the tests ???
Was he an OMC mechanic ??
Your idle should be set actually in the water and not on the hose as the backpressure is different.

i know that he is a certified marine mechanic but couldnt tell you if hes a omc mechanic or not. he told me that everything was good after he did his checks. i dont know any of exact compression numbers tho. how can i check to see if there is enough fuel gettin through the system?

Disconnect the hose from the pump to the carb's
Put the muffs on (to save the impeller)
Crank the motor with a temporary hose going into a container
Watch the output.

Re: 1996 Johnson outboard - stall

Hi, I have a black 1996 Johnston Outboard, re-built the piston (rings) 4 years ago, didnt run it last summer, cleaned the spark plugs, boat starts ok but not always, but when it starts stalls after about 15 seconds.

Previous reading sounds like a carb clean is in order please let me know if there's any other advice.

Thanks

I have the same outboard with the same problem. What was the solution?
