Starting Merc 3.0 Out Of water With Closed Cooling System.

Hi, friend just got a 98 Maxum with the merc 3.0. It has the Closed cooling for the engine only not the manifolds. He has been starting it out of water with no muffs. I told him he should not do it, He wont listen says its okay because it is closed cooled??? Isnt there still an impeller bringing water up to the manifolds?? If so ifs probally toast.......

Yes, he still needs muffs. Without the water he will fry the impeller. His only luck is the fact that he has a gen II outdrive and the impeller puts up with a lot more abuse than an older (1990 and older) alphas. He is just lucky that he is still getting away with it.
It will catch up with him.
