About six weeks ago I pulled my drive to install a new water pump for the upcoming summer boating season. With the good advice of these forums it went off without a hitch. Ran the boat a few times and it started growling in turns. Again with the help of the forums I suspected a Gimbal Bearing. I pulled the drive to replace it and got a huge surprise ? water with a splash of drive oil in the U-Joint Bellows and rusted U-Joints. I inspected the bellows fold by fold inside and out and couldn?t find so much as a pinhole.

For the record, I bought the boat as I project and really enjoy doing as much as I can myself.

So my questions are:

1. How ambitious of a project is replacing the U-joint and front seal? As I don?t have the tools would it be more cost effective to have it done professionally or buy the tools and give it the old college try?
2. Other than the bellows themselves, what else could account for the water? The gaskets appeared to be in the correct positions when I took the drive off.
