i had a water pump go out and overheated the engine. Fixed the water pump and restarted the engine. Only problem is that when ever shifting to forward or reverse motor dies. With the motor off can shift into gear and the prop still spins freely. What could this be?

sorry should have put this in first post it is a 1990 Mercruiser 4.3 v6 with an alpha 1 1st gen drive it is a gas motor.

well the drive will go into gear found a rubber fuel line from carb to fuel pump bad. now the boat will shift into gear but now the prop does not go in forward or reverse. could the shift shaft not be connected correctly upon reinstall after changing the water pump? 90 alpha 1 4.3 engine

If you follow the shift adjustment procedure in the alpha 1 manual (free download in Adults only section) you'll either fix the adjustment or find the problem.
