1978 Johnson 150 won't exceed 2000 RPMs

I have a 1978 Johnson 150, took it out on the lake today and fired right up. Idled past the no wake and eased into it, everything was going great until it got up to about 2 grand. The motor wouldn't run rough or die out, just would not increase rpms. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Semper Fi:confused:

Spark check the engine to be sure you have hot spark to all 6 plugs. If you have good spark to all 6, then look into the fuel system next. Have you done a compression check on the engine?
