I am a fairly new boater and trying to understand something. I have a 1990 Mercruiser 454 mag 7.4l engine with a bravo 3 outdrive. I just purchased a Raymarine A50 D gps/fishfinder. It has a digital instrumentation (fuel gauge, tach, speed, ect...)option available on the unit. My question is... How do I get it all to work. I know it says its for NMEA 2000 . What does that mean exactly? Can I get it to work with my boat? What do I need? Thanks for any help!

You are out of luck. NMEA-2000 is a universal standard for digital networking of boat devices, but MERCURY does not have any engines which comply with it. Your Mercury motor can only use proprietary Mercury Smartcraft devices. All other engine makers produce NMEA-2000 engines except Mercury.

in 1990, even NMEA 0183 was probably not available for engines...
