ive been rebuilding my '76 25 hp evinrude, its completely torn down.

the lower unit ive been using has been functioning fine but is kinda beat on the skeg and is corroded bad around the water pump mount. i have a spare lower unit that is in much nicer shape that i was going to swap in. i stopped when i noticed my old lower unit has a nice stiff detent for each gear/neutral but the nicer spare lower unit has no detent at all.

figuring the balls/spring were out/shot i took it apart and it has no detent and never had one.

my question is can i use the non-detent lower on my motor that had a detent lower? will it stay in gear?

im going to open up my old lower tomorrow to check it out, i might have to frankenstein the 2.

Re: lower unit, detent/no detent

The shift handle should help keep it in gear.

Might make for smooth shifting.

But might make it vibrate into gear....
