I have a 1973 Chrysler 70 horse outboard. If I prime the plug hole with fuel mix it will start after about 10 tries. After it starts it seems to run ok with lever fwd on fast idle. If I back it off to slow idle it will usually die. I have relaced fuel pump diaphram, totally cleaned carbs, replaced plugs. Choke is working fine. It still seems like it isn't getting enough fuel to start. Could it be piston rings are stuck not allowing vacuum? or gasket leaking somewhere? should I eplace head gasket? I am totally baffled.

Start with a compression test. Post results.

Well compression seems ok, so shouldn't be an issue with rings or head gasket. I don't know much about any of this, but a friend had a similar issue over the weekend and had his idle speed screw improperly set. We increased idle speed and off he went. Did you lync and sync the carbs after cleaning?

The linkage is set back as it was. How do you sync carbs? Is the idle speed adjustment on the outside of carbs in front. Is their an order to setting or start with the top?
