hi, I have a 1974 johnson 4hp model# 4W74R. two years ago I used it for a weekend and ran ok until the rewind let go. I would like to take the time to upgrade a few new parts, I noticed after 20-25 pulls, it would start, i don't think it should take that many pulls?? ignition?? coil?? fuel pump?? water pump??. my question is what should I replace.

I know a little about old outboards. Probly the card needs cleaning, or rebilding, or the coil points need to be cleaned if cleaning the points dont work the probly need to be replaced. and the most simpl fix may be the spark plugs may be fowled. the order i would tackle this stuff in is Sark plug,then carb,then fuel pump,and if all that doeset work clean the coil poits, and if that doeset the coil needs to be replaced. This may help or may not. Good Luck
