That is an odd looking flywheel, not what came with the motor. The screw holes are for the compression relief, also missing. You don't need a generator. Even if you do get one, it won't work with that flywheel. And even if you get the right flywheel, you would still need a $100 voltge regulator for the generator.

I wonder if it even runs with that flywheel? They could of just slapped it on there to sell it. But if it does work then it depends on how good you want it. The pull start wont work with that flywheel. I wouldnt mess with a generator. Biggest thing you need is a starter and bracket. I wired up my own starter so I didnt have to buy a wire harness, but I'm half hill billy. Dont really need the pull start, but like I said hill billy.

The compression is not too bad, but the 10 pound difference between the two cylinders is not good.

Change the head gasket and remeasure the compression.

Are you trying to get a good running cool old motor or are you trying to get just a good running motor?
Parts are very hard to come by for these old motors. Also they can be more expensive do to the fact that you cant get them.
If i were the owner of this motor I would sell it for parts and move on to the next one. Unless you are looking to restore it then have fun and get the satisfaction of nowing you saved one more of these great old motors from the scrap yard.

You can perform a de-carbon procedure (see the FAQ's at the top of the Repair forum) on it after you get it running and that might help both cylinders. My first outboard overhaul was an RDS-21. It was seized when I got it but it started and ran on the first crank after re-assembly. Had to go through the carb two more times before it would idle. Your best shot for parts may be another "donor" motor because OMC made millions in that series from 1956-1964. The experts here like F_R can help you with any issue. Good luck!

This was obviously already a donor motor for someone else's project, given the wrong flywheel and other missing parts....

I think the flywheel assembly with ring-gear was originally p/n was 580281 but later changed to 580377. Without the ring-gear, it was 580285, changed to 580336. My info came from the source in the link below. 580280 may work but I don't know that. Good luck!

EDIT: When I ran your p/n's through the "Search" feature at the link above, here's what I learned. 580232 was not found so not much I can say about it. However, both 580177 and 580280 were replaced by 580336. Sounds to me like you are good to go with p/n 580177.

Boy, that needs some parts... I wouldn't worry about the compression. It's close enough and for a rope start test, that's not bad. That's the only year of the engine in that configuration. I'd consider get a 40hp from the 60's as they're a dime a dozen up here.

I have the parts manual for that engine. If you PM me with your email and request, I can send it to you. Then you'll see what goes where.
