Hello,

I have a 1974 Johnson 115. I started it yesterday and it immediately died. I checked fuel and replaced the plugs. I never got it started.

Today, I tried it and it started right up, but would not stay running. It missed real bad.

Next I uplugged one spark plug wire... it started right up, it would idle and throttle up fine... but ran rough. I plugged that wire back up and repeated the process with the other three cyliinders. (same result, ran, but rough).

After that I re-attched all the plug wires and the engine started and ran great. I'm guessing it did not heal itself. Maybe an ignition part failing?

Any help would really be appreciated;)

Thank you,
Todd Templeton

Weak ignition system components tend to fail when the engine heats up to normal operating temps. It may run fine when cold, not so well when warm. An inductive timing light on each plug wire will show weak spark, no spark, or misses. Use it for diagnosing spark problems when the engine starts to miss. You can pull the plugs and check them to see if they appear wet (maybe no spark) or dry-maybe no fuel... Do they all look the same? If you think it is a fuel delivery issue, constantly prime the fuel hose bulb. That will force fuel around the pumps, directly into the carbs.
