1990 40 hp evinrude. won't go over 2500 rpm.

i have a 1990 40 evinrude (VE40TLESR) won't go over 2500 rpm. even when i put it in neutral still not going over 2500 rpm. acts like its bouncing off a revlimiter. need help. thanks guys. checked fuel and all is good. could be bad stator??

whoa, hold on there! sure, could be bad stator, there's probably a good 8 or 10 things it could be.

First thing I'd do is, make sure the timer base linkage is still intact, and the timer base moves all the way to its stop without sticking. Then I'd make sure the carb butterflies are still in sync (if it's a 2-carb motor, can't remember).

Then a compression test followed by a spark test. The Engine FAQ section of iboats has directions for these procedures.

If the stator is bad, that'll show up in your spark test results.

i checked my linkage and all is good. i marked where my #1 and #2 piston on my flywheel and i'm getting # 2 with my number one sometimes. so i'm leading towards my ignition module. same as power pack right?

have you run it at night, to look for crossfire along the wires?
