I have a 1999 2 Stroke 200 HP Mercury that has been running fine, but for the last few weeks there has has been an oil slick that trails behind the boat when the engine is off or as I"m using the trolling motor. The slick seems to be coming from a housing slit just above the exhaust vent.. The motor worked fine the day before, but this am my boat alarm went off as I was preparing for another adventure. (The motor had been trimmed in the up position.) I took off the motor cover and found oil in the bottom of the engine housing. (There seemed to be ample oil at the top of the engine in the plastic reservoir). Any ideas? Thanks much!!!

Where the oil line comes in, it goes to what looks like a T. It's actually a check valve with a short piece of hose hanging off the bottom of it. If that hose is dripping, the check valve is bad. It could be so bad that it is sucking in a bit of air when it isn't supposed to, and an air bubble in the top of the engine mounted tank will set off the alarm.

hope it helps
John
