I have 1988 johnson 90 hp with a possible starter solnoid issue.
On the first start up of the season , nothing happened when I turned the key, dead. No click sound , nothing. The battery is strong and everything else powers up . I jumped the large leads on the started solnoid and the engine turned over. I checked the solnoid fuse to the control panel and it was OK. Next I put 12 volts accross the small leads on the solnoid and the motor turned over, but the motor continued to turn over after I removed the power. The motor continued to turn over even when I turned the key off. The only way to stop the motor was to disconnect the battery????
After about 30 seconds of letting things cool down I heard a clink from the engine, probably the sticky solnoid resetting.
With the key in the off position , I started to reconnect the battery and as soon as I touched the positive cable lead to the battery the engine began to turn over???? After a couple of tries I was able to connect the battery cable without the starter engaging.
The next time I used the key and it worked ,but again the engine would not stop turning over when the key was turned off.
Does this sound like a solnoid or starter switch(key) issue????
