I have a 1996 Mariner Pro Max 225 that has been in storage for about 5 years. I recently re-installed the engine on a Ranger Bass boat and started checking things out. I learned that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and replaced it so the engine would run correctly.
The engine now starts and runs great until it is put under a load when the boat is coming out of the hole. Most times the engine will shut down at about 2000-3000 RPM. Sometimes it acts like you are turning the key on and off, which tells me the problem is electrical and not fuel. I learned that if I pump the throttle handle sometimes it will accelerate and run fine all the way to 6000 RPM.
I visually checked the stator and trigger by removing the flywheel. I also checked the trigger out with my ohm meter as outlined in the manual. It tested just as it should. I have ordered a PVA to perform more test, but really believe the trigger must be the bad component.
Does anyone have any insight to this?
Thanks, RWY56
