1980 85Hp Evinrude will not idle down after restoration

Good Day,

We just restored our old Wilker boat and took her out on the water, but she wouldn't start so we installed a new starter...still had issues so we installed a new solenoid...now she starts beautifully but will not idle down. We think we may have wired the ignition to the gauges and everything else incorrectly. Does anyone know how to help on this one or where to find a diagram to show the correct wiring?? Any help would be greatly appreciated...getting so antsy to get out on the water...spent 3 weekends now trying to fix this

Make sure the butterfly valves in the carb fully close at idle and the links are fully retarded, then I would look for an air leak, use WD40 around the carbs and inspect fuel line clamps etc. Try a temp deck tank too.

The idle is set on that engine by adjusting the idle timing. It's that set screw on the spark advance lever. You may want to disconnect the throttle cable temporarily while you adjust the idle, then determine if you need to make any adjustments to the throttle cable when you reinstall it.
