Gap between transom and outdrive

I picked up a project boat a couple weeks ago and this gap has been in the back of my mind since I noticed it. It's just a tad more than a 1/4".

The engine is currently out of the boat...I'm trying to ease my mind thinking the engine's weight will pull the gap closer.

Also, won't water seep through this gap and if so, how do I fix this problem?

Thanks

a couple beers would be a better way....

sorry. You have a serious problem that needs to be investigated from the inside of the hull. Transom might be rotten, or some fasteners are missing or broken. I think you'll be removing the gimbal & transom shield either way.
