fuel gauge problem

my fuel gauge is showing full, but its not. So how do i determine which is bad, the sending unit or gauge ?

Check the wires and power and ground. if good,
Remove the sending unit and use a ohm-meter. read the resistance as you move the float up and down. you will have to find the specs on your sending unit and see if it is good.
If all are good the gauge is bad.

If the sending unit is a standard swing arm type the resistance values range from 33 ohms full, 109 ohms at 1/2 full, and 240 ohms empty (give or take a tad on all readings). You must disconnect the sender wire to measure the resistance. Ensure the ground wire on the gauge has not moved to where it is contacting the sender terminal. The gauge is rarely the problem.

the unit is the sliding type up and down,tank is 30 gal, with about 7-8 gal , the unit stil reads full
