I have a 1988 evinrude vro 60hp that runs extremely noisy. The vro system was removed due to porous pump and no new parts could be sourced, so I just premix now. Engine runs fine, starts first turn of the key but is just so noisy especially at idle. Its not as bad when running at speed but still noisier than it should be. There is also a slight vibration as you can see the engine shake at idle both in and out of the water. Any ideas what may be the cause of my problem. There is no tilt or trim on this engine either - is it possible to fit one to it ?
Any info much appreciated;)
IMO its like an exhaust problem, doesnt actually sound like anything is wrong, just very noisy.................has been running like this for 3 yrs now with no engine trouble................again just noisy:rolleyes:

You'll need to be more explanatory about this noisy engine. We'll need a more detailed description of the noise..... rod knock, exhaust type noise, generalized loud engine such as noisy bearings etc.

Has this engine always been noisy or have you owned it longer than the three year period you mention? If at one time it ran quiet or what could be called normal, what happened between that time and now.... powerhead work, lower unit been off for any reason, anything?

Has the sound proofing been removed from the inside of the hood?

Noise has not changed in the 3 years I have had it. Its just generally noisy, suppose like a noisy exhaust if I was trying to describe it. Sound-proof foam is in the hood though small bits are missing but most of it there alright.
Has just had general services since I got it and goes like a bat out of hell, starts on the button and never let me down.............just so noisy. Where is the exhaust on these engines,is it through the prop or above water ?

If someone neglected to install the below exhaust seal (#44), that would allow exhaust noise to travel to areas where it doesn't belong. That is the main seal between the long inner exhaust housing and the lower unit.
