i just bought 73 with a 140 hp merc and a alpha 1<br />outdrive -- when i ingauge in drive forward or rev it ingauges hard is this normal

Yep, the alpha1,+ the mod.1(which is what should be on your boat) should be shifted Into gear Briskly,+ should Clunk......

When in the water,does it shift out of gear okay?<br />shifting on the trailer is meaningless.

If engine idle speed is too high it well cause <br />excessive clunk and premature wear.

What do you mean by engages hard?<br />Is the lever hard to move, or are you talking about the "clunk"?
