The motor is a 60's 18hp evinrude and recently started coming out of gear(slipping) in forward gear. It seems to gradually work its way out of gear and then immediatly slams back in to gear. I put my hand on the shift lever and could feel it backing out of gear until it re-engaged. With the engine off the prop doesn't turn when it is engaged, so I'm not sure what's goin on. Bent shift rod? Any info helps.

Thanks,

Mike

First check the shift rod linkage. Remove the cover on the motor leg and see if the upper and lower shift rods are firmly connected to the coupler. Look for any play in the shift rod. If everything looks good and tight, then the next probability is a bad clutch dog in the gearcase. Let's hope it's the shift rod.

Probable worn clutch dog and fwd gear.

Probably clutch dog but you could try adjusting the shift linkage. Or maybe reverse the clutch dog.

I had the same problem on a 10 hp...turned out it was the prop bushing
