I have a 1986 50hp Force that needs rebuilt. I checked the compression and it was 90lbs in the top cylinder and 80lbs in the bottom. The engine recently stopped running and now backfires when I try to start it.

What other year models of powerheads will interchange with my mid and lower half of the engine.

I found other year models of powerheads but not a 1986.

I thought of replacing the pistons and rings, but I would have to split the case to have the cylinders bored, then I would need a powerhead rebuild kit, which cost alot more than a good used powerhead.(I can't find a kit for a 1986 anyway)

Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

Have you checked to see if the flywheel has slipped? Most cases of back firing is timing related, might be worth looking at. As to your motor issue, have you ever run a decarb solution through it before? A lot of motors will gain compression after a good decarb

I have not checked the flywheel, nor have I tried decarb solution.
The engine was running OK but would only plane out my 13' Bayliner at full throttle. If I backed off of the throttle a little it would sink back into the water.
