Wont engage into forward but goes into reverse fine..

At first when i left the dock the transmission seeme to slip. I mean I would be cruising and the rpms would suddenly rise and the boat would slow. This happened like 3 times for about 2 seconds then it was fine. Later in the day it woulndt engage into forward gear. Reverse was easy...it clicked right in. I have a 2001 18' SeaRay with merc 4cyl engine Alpha One outdrive.
