excessive smoke under a load

I have a 84 v4 140hp. I installed a trolling plate and now it smokes really bad when the plate is down. When I run it without the plate it smokes a little and when I run it on the hose there is almost no smoke. The smoke is white/grey. I got the trolling plate because it idled too fast to troll or it kept dying at idle speeds.

OF COURSE, the trolling plate is blocking the natural exit of the exhaust. suggest a small outboard for trolling.

Am I causing any damage by using the trolling plate?
