ok me and my dad bought a 1990 17 ft bayliner capri with a 48hp evinrude outboard for $1000 great shape but the motors a basket case. the bearings that go under the rods on the crank were bad. the inside of the case has a little wear on it not bad at all. no damage to the sleeves or pistons. i priced bearing kits and full gasket kits for about $200 total. i would do the work myself but didnt take the motor apart myself so im not that sure on getting it together myself. im a motocross racer and am pretty mechanicaly inclined. just dont know enough about boat motors. my local evinrude guy charges $50 hr. is that a good rate? he said it would take 4 or 5 hrs to do does that sound about right? any help is appreciated.

For me... I would order the factory service manual and parts manual.
www.outboardbooks.com
and DIY.
The parts manual is a big help due to the exploded part diagrams.
Steer away from seloc and clymer manuals, no good.

Fl Keys rate is $125 an hr.I am suspecious of the rod bearings being the only things that are bad, that said though.YOU CAN do the job, just get a manuel.Buy the parts on IBOATS.It sounds like the motor was run without oil,You better get the crank miked out for wear

well the motors apart and the crank bearings that go inside the bottom of the push rod (on a bike we call it the lower end bearing) is the culprit. the needles on the needle bearing are all seized up. the crank is in pretty good shape but some of the bearings have fused to the crank i could pick off alot of it. shoild i try a wire wheel on it. or isnt there an acid that can help get it off. i may try to do it myself. can you post pics on this site? the guy that quoted $50 an hour was an old tire kicker he said it needs a new crank this and that $2000 to fix but he convinently had a 60 hp johnson to sell me for $2400. i see what hes up to. the rods are good pistons are good it dosent seem that bad to me. what do you guys think? any help would be great. thanks

if there are any needle bearing frozen to the crank...then the crank is shot as well!!!!

the rust connection goes into both parts, the needle bearing and the crank...so once you get it off and clean everything up, you will have a small depression where the needle sat in the crank...which will destroy the next set of bearings...he easiest way out is to get another crank...

for a very old and rare motor of some kind, the solution would be to machine a small amount off the crank and then plate , to over size , then regrind to original specs....very labor intensive....

rods may have the same issue on the ID of the big end

I seriously doubt that it will be worth rebuilding ,Im thinking your crank must be bad,I will tell you this, the lowerunit might fetch a nice penny. They tend to blow up .For some reason there is a weakness. There were guys on this site lately looking for replacement lowerunit. That said, with a lowerunit that has tendency to blow and a blown powerhead,I would highly suggest you buy a good used engine, the 3cyl.70 is great.especially the 1990 ish models with the one piece exhust covers.Try selling that lower .Take nothing less than 500
