engine runs flawless except when i first crank and idle a little gets gassy smelling and it feels a little boggy. when i rev it two or three quick times its like it clears out and pulls up perfect. What could be making it run rich like this.

Stone cold ?
They like to run rather rich on startup, keep bumping the key as needed and within a minute as the cyl's warm up they will idle on their own. Its normal.
Let it warm up, don't rev it up cold.
You might be over doing the choke on initial startup.
If you still smell gas after its completely warmed up and had a good run then theres a problem, otherwise... "release the hounds".:)

check the choke solenoid, the top seal can develop leaks, the rebuild kit is about $12 here on iBoats.

Does any fuel come out the carb throats?
Could also be a stuck float in that case.

Above assuming you've inspected all lines for leaks, evident by damp fittings.

Pressurize the system with the bulb before looking for leaks.

It is not unsusual for the carbs to leak a little, esp if the engine was shut off and tilted up out of the water. Any excess fuel will collect in the bottom of the airbox, then get recirculated in the bottom cylinder during the combustion process. It takes 30 seconds or so for this excess fuel to get burned off in that bottom cyl-then the engine will run normally.
