Mercruiser 3.0L RPM fluctuation then died

I have a '95 Bayliner with a 3.0L Mercruiser I/O - was leisurely cruising along and all gauges were working and all readings good. Suddenly noticed the RPM's were periodically jumping up then back to normal - and the volt meter was pegging to the top then back to normal - going back and forth like a windshield wiper! I shut the motor off and checked all the wire connections that I could easily see in the motor area, found nothing unusual. Tried to restart - but all gauges dead, and obviously the engine did not turn over either.

The automatic bilge pump and the tilt-n-trim on the motor are still functional.

Any ideas?

The pumps work because they are wired directly to the battery.

Bad ground or positive lead somewhere would be guess.
