1987_Aplha 1 outdrive; Merc 165, 3.7L 4 cyl.

I removed the lower unit on the outdrive to change the water impellar. After doing so I realized that I have a steel, spring-like or coiled washer lying on top of and at the base of my driveshaft.

I've looked at a schematic/diagram of the upper assembly. I'm guessing it belongs to the lower end of the crankshaft? Does anyone know the name of this washer, or where it goes, and what does it mean when one of these drops?

Thank you for your time.

Thanks, but no, I believe that picture is once you have the water pump removed.

I dropped the lower unit and there was a steel, coiled washer lying on top of the water pump housing, around the base of the drive shaft.

that to me looks like the spring that goes into the seal up the upper drive shaft housing that spring goes around the lips of a seal to keep pressure on the sealing lips when its sealing aorund a shaft.

you would be best to replace that seal i dont think theres anyway you can get that sping back into the seal

Thanks, boat127. I guess the seal is bad so I'll look into replacing it. Guess the fun never stops.
