Bilge Pump

Out fishing yesterday and about half way through the day my bilge pump wouldn't shut off. It is an Auto/Manual Mayfair Marine. I had to disconnect the wires to my battery. I have read others' posts to help troubleshoot the issue but after trying some suggestions the issue is still an issue. I took the cartridge out and will still run when hooked up. I believe this means debris cant be the problem. I am unable to open the cartridge. I don't think it is supposed to be opened. The wiring seems to be solid. Any thoughts? Do I need to bite the bullet and buy a new one?:confused:

I would contact Mayfair and ask- in mu opinion it sounds like the auto part is stuck on ON = Broken

I would look at the cost of replacing the pump rather then trying to fix it, only because most things now are throw-away and cost more to repair then to replace Unless I stay in sight of land I am not sure I want such a simple devise to be questionable when I need it most

I would just replace it with a rule. Then maybe turn yours into a backup pump with a manual on/off switch. they make really nice automatic Rule pumps nowadays. I bought one on here last year. call the iboats store sometimes they have specials that arent listed on the web.

I did actually turn my old, smaller one into a portable backup pump. It still worked i just wanted a bigger one with more gph.

Being in the electronics field (for over 40 years) I am familiar with that kind of level detector. If it isn't shutting off, it's TOAST.

Generally, simplicity = reliability so I agree with the suggestions to use a simple float switch.

Your pump is fine, it's your float that's buggered up. See if the float has something wedged up inside that is causing it to turn on the pump. Despite little cages/grates that a lot of floats have, stuff in the bilge still gets up in there and causes the float to raise and get stuck in that position...

The float is stuck up .... Pretty much the only part that gets constant power is the float ....You can probably free it up with your hand ....

if the pump is still working , you may opt to buy a seperate float switch and wire it in as directed...just a thought

thats why automatic pumps are great, no more float switches to worry about.
