Can anyone tell me how to test a transistor volt reg. I have a '70 V-180 w/140 mercruiser. A diagram or explaination would help. Used a multimeter to check how many volts I had at the bat and the meter was all over the place but never went over 14 volts. I'm use to working on autos and I know boat charging systems are a little different.

Re: voltage regulater

Same charging system, just marine rated.Personally, I`d update to the GM single wire .

Re: voltage regulater

I kind of thought that just wasn't sure. I have read that the charging system wouldn't put out full amps until the engine was at higher rpm's. On an auto I can read them at idle with no problem. That iswhat had me confused. About how much is a one wire for marine use. And is there a way to bypass the regulater to go intergrated regulater.

With the one wire, you just don't use the old regulator...remove it.
