I have a 1973 Evinrude 50 hp model number 50372. Haven't had it long, but when I switch off the key the rev counter needle slowly climbs to around the 1500rpm reading. As soon as the key is turned on again it immediately drops back to 0. When the motor is running it works fine. Any suggestions where I can start to look for the problem ?

Agreed, normal. In fact there were so many concerned owners that OMC came out with a service bulletin, saying it is normal

Just one more question on this - does it have much effect on the battery ? Should I install a battery isolation switch ?

No effect on the battery. They read 1500 while still in the box, no battery at all. The tach is switched "off" when you turn the key off---that's why it rises upscale.
