Lower End water intrusion

I have some lower end water intrusion on my 87 115hp inline 6....the oil comes out milky, and it leaks out while on the lake.

Is this something I can tackle myself? I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but I've never taken apart an outboard.

I have ordered a Seloc manual, but its not supposed to arrive for a couple weeks.

If someone could explain the process, and the difficulty, I would certainly appreciate it!

Can you tell where on the lower unit the oil leaks from? Is it a seal or is there a crack in the casing?

It appears to be leaking from directly behind the prop - I put the motor on the muffs sitting in the driveway after being on the lake Sunday...water/oil mix came from the prop area.

Local shop says less than $200, I think thats a fair price....

It sounds like a seal that has gone bad. You need some pulling tools and also need to put the prop shaft on a lathe to check it's straightness. $200 is a fair price.

I would probably end up spending more in specialty tools, and have no use for them afterwards.

Thanks Dave for the help!!
