Hi!
I recently bought a 1972 Johnson 50hp with electro hydraulic shifting.
I am new to boating (have only had SeaDoos in the past), and I have honestly tried to read as much as possible before posting a new question.

When I try to shift into neutral, nothing happens and the prop keeps spinning.
When I shift from F to R, it basically just slams the from Forward to Reverse, without going into Neutral.

I have a servicing manual, and followed the troubleshooting steps.
I tested the solenoids, and all Ohm readings seem to be in the OK range.
I checked for proper power to the blue and green cables. OK as well.

Now, I just drained the old oil from the bottom end. It appeared to be clean and without water.
I just ordered a litre of the Premium Blend, as the store was out of it :S

Could it be, due to a low oil level in the bottom end, that prevents it from shifting?

ADDITIONALLY,
the motor overheats after just a few minutes on idle.
First thing should be to open up the water pump and inspect it?

not very familiar with electric shifting but....

since you just purchase this boat its a good idea to change the water pump, rebuild the carburetors, change lower unit oil, wires and spark plugs....

good luck

Thanks "countvlad"

The previous owner claims to have done all that work just after lasts season. But I will take a look before to make sure. Thanks for the tip

So turns out the previous owner switched the Solenoid cables after a waterpump overhaul.

I was about to tear it all apart, when I noticed the cables going down to the lower unit!

Replaced lower unit exhaust seal, which I think solved the overheating as well. Ran for 30min on muffs without any problems!

She is ready for water now! :D:D

Thanks again guys!
