1973 Mercury 1150 115 horse Outboard smoking switch box

I have owned this boat for 15 years. When I went to fire it up this year out of the blue smoke and sparks were coming from the switch box. I was going to replace it but was wondering if anyone else has heard of such a thing? Could it be something else or did the switch box just finally kick the bucket?
